Thanksgiving Sorting and Patterns — Early Math Made Fun

Sorting, matching, and making patterns are early math skills that help children recognize order, logic, and organization. Thanksgiving is full of opportunities to practice these skills in playful ways!

Encourage your child to notice colors, shapes, and patterns around your home or holiday table:

  • Sort utensils by size or type.
  • Group foods by color (“All the orange foods together!”).
  • Make a pattern with paper feathers: red-yellow-red-yellow.
You can also talk about what doesn’t belong in a group — a great way to build critical thinking.

Try This at Home:

🍂 Create a “Feather Pattern Bracelet”
Cut strips of paper and tape them into a circle to make a bracelet. Have your child glue or color in a repeating pattern (red, orange, yellow, red, orange, yellow).

Encouraging Reminder:

Patterns are everywhere! When you help your child notice and describe them, you’re strengthening math readiness and observation skills at the same time.
