This week’s tip: Focus on independence over academics.
Most kindergarten teachers will tell you they can teach letters, numbers, and sight words. What makes the biggest difference at the start of the year is whether a child can manage simple tasks independently.
Practice one small independence skill this week — such as putting on a jacket, opening snack containers, washing hands without help, or cleaning up toys after playtime. Choose just one and work on it consistently. Small skills build big confidence.

Try This at Home
Do a “Kindergarten Practice Round.”
Set a timer for 10 minutes and pretend you’re at school.
- Child hangs up a backpack (or any bag).
- Takes out a snack and opens it.
- Completes a simple task (coloring a picture or building with blocks).
- Cleans up independently when the timer goes off.
Keep it light and fun — no pressure, just practice.
