Look for what your child can do (not what they can’t).
It’s easy to focus on what still needs work—letters not mastered yet, numbers still tricky, or social skills still growing. But kindergarten readiness isn’t about perfection. It’s about a strong foundation.
If your child can follow simple directions, communicate their needs, try new things (even a little hesitantly), and is learning to be more independent, you are already on the right track.
This week, shift your focus. Instead of asking, “What are we missing?” ask: “What is my child already doing well?”
Confidence grows when children feel capable—and that confidence is one of the biggest predictors of a smooth start to kindergarten.
Try This at Home
The “Look How Ready You Are!” Moment
Pick one everyday routine—getting dressed, cleaning up toys, or helping with a simple task.
As your child does it, gently point out what they’re doing well:
“You followed directions.”
“You kept trying.”
“You did that all by yourself!”
Keep it simple and genuine. You’re helping your child see their own readiness.
Encouraging Reminder
You don’t have to prepare your child perfectly—just lovingly and consistently.
