When parents think about kindergarten readiness, they often focus on letters, numbers, and early reading skills. But there’s one skill that quietly helps children succeed with all the others — confidence.

Kindergarten Quick Tip
Focus on building “I can try” confidence.
Kindergarten teachers often say that confident children are easier to teach than children who already know many academic skills but are afraid to try. Confidence doesn’t mean a child can do everything perfectly. It simply means they believe they can try something new, even if it’s a little hard.
You can build this kind of confidence at home by giving your child small opportunities to do things on their own — and celebrating the effort rather than the result. Instead of jumping in to help right away, try saying: “Give it a try first. I believe you can do it.” That simple moment teaches children an important lesson: trying is part of learning.
And that mindset makes kindergarten feel exciting instead of scary.
Try This at Home
The “I Can Do It” Challenge
Choose one small task each day that your child can try independently.
Ideas include:
• putting on their own shoes
• helping set the table
• putting toys away
• carrying their backpack
• introducing themselves to someone new
When they finish, celebrate the effort with something simple like: “Look at that! You did it yourself!” These little victories add up and slowly build the confidence children need for school.
Encouraging Reminder
Children don’t need to be perfect to be ready for kindergarten — they just need to believe they are capable of learning.
Resource of the Week

And if you’d like an easy way to practice confidence at home, I also created a printable: Kindergarten Confidence at Home
It’s filled with simple, encouraging activities that help children practice independence, bravery, and the courage to try new things.
Small moments of encouragement today can grow into big confidence tomorrow.
You can do this!
