Why Your Child Can’t Sit Still (and What to Do Instead)
If your child seems to wiggle, bounce, climb, or wander during learning time, you’re definitely not alone. Many young children learn best through movement—and that’s actually very normal before kindergarten.

Instead of expecting long periods of sitting still, try breaking learning into short, active chunks throughout the day. Young children often focus better when they can move their bodies while they learn. A quick 5–10 minute activity is usually much more effective than a long lesson that ends in frustration.
Movement-based learning can look like:
- counting while jumping,
- practicing letters with sidewalk chalk,
- acting out stories,
- or searching the house for shapes or colors.
Short, playful learning moments add up over time—and they often work better than forcing children to stay seated too long.
Try This at Home
Pick one simple learning activity this week and make it active.
For example:
- Have your child hop while counting to 10.
- Tape letters to the wall and let them run to the letter you call out.
- Practice shapes by drawing them outside with chalk.
No fancy supplies needed—just a little movement and fun.
Encouraging Reminder
A child who struggles to sit still is not “behind.” Many young children learn best when movement is part of the process.
