Practice Independence in Small Daily Tasks
One of the biggest adjustments for children who haven’t attended preschool isn’t academics — it’s independence.
Kindergarten teachers expect children to:
- Put on and zip coats
- Open lunch containers
- Wash hands independently
- Follow simple two-step directions
- Clean up after themselves
This week, focus on building independence in just one daily routine. Choose something your child already does with help and gradually step back. For example, instead of zipping their coat for them, guide their hands and let them try first.
Small daily practice builds big confidence.
Try This at Home
The “I Can Do It!” Challenge
Pick one routine (getting dressed, cleaning up toys, snack prep, etc.) and turn it into a confidence game.
Say:
“Let’s see how much you can do all by yourself!”
After they finish, celebrate effort — not perfection:
“I noticed you kept trying even when it was tricky!”
No charts. No prizes. Just encouragement and repetition.
