Talk About Math Instead of Teaching Math
One of the easiest ways to prepare your child for kindergarten math is simply to start noticing math together.
Instead of quizzing your child with questions like, “What number is this?” or “Count to 20,” invite them into conversations about the math they already see every day.
Try asking questions like:
- Which tower is taller?
- Which apple is bigger?
- Do we have enough plates for everyone?
- What shape is that sign?
- Which cup holds more water?
- What do you think comes next in this pattern?
These simple conversations help children build number sense, vocabulary, observation skills, and confidence—all things kindergarten teachers value just as much as counting.

Play the “Math Detective” Game
Choose one room in your house and spend five minutes being “Math Detectives.”
Can your child find:
- 3 circles?
- Something longer than a pencil?
- Two objects that match?
- Something shaped like a rectangle?
- A pattern?
- Five items that are the same color?
There’s no right or wrong way to play. The goal is simply to notice that math is all around us.
