I hope you’re finding little moments to enjoy this season with your child. Remember, some of the most valuable kindergarten preparation happens during ordinary moments at home—not during formal lessons.
Kindergarten Quick Tip
Don’t rush to “upgrade” your child’s crayons.
Many parents think bigger kids should automatically move to full-size crayons, markers, or pencils. But shorter crayons (or broken crayons that are still perfectly usable) actually encourage children to use the small muscles in their fingers instead of gripping with their whole hand.
This week, try offering your child a basket of short crayons for drawing or coloring. They may seem less exciting than a brand-new box, but they’re quietly helping develop the finger strength and control needed for writing.
Sometimes the simplest tools are the best teachers.
Try This at Home
The Sponge Squeeze Challenge
All you need is:
- Two bowls
- A clean kitchen sponge
- Water
Fill one bowl with water and leave the other empty. Have your child soak the sponge, then squeeze every last drop into the empty bowl. Keep going until the first bowl is empty!
It’s a fun game that strengthens the muscles in the hands and fingers while improving coordination. If you want to make it extra exciting, set a timer and see if they can beat their own time the next day.
Encouraging Reminder
Kindergarten readiness isn’t built in one afternoon. Small, playful activities repeated over time create the strongest foundation.
